So when I was referred to Trifecta by a friend in 2016, I figured it was worth a shot. Over two years and hundreds of Trifecta meals later, I remain a happy customer. I use their Paleo meal plan currently for my lunches and dinners during the work week, and in the past I loved the A La Carte menu when I was using a macro-counting weight loss plan with awesome success. My favorites are ANYTHING with salmon and chicken, but their steak is killer, too. My husband loves the beef and bison burgers, and my kids occasionally steal the burgers, too. We love Trifecta and I have to say, knowing it's a California-based small business just makes it THAT MUCH BETTER.

Both Whole30 and Paleo eliminate some of the same types of foods, and don’t focus on calorie counting. However, the Whole30 is a short-term elimination program that is designed to help people identify food sensitivities and create new, healthy habits with food. It’s not meant to be followed forever, and it’s not prescriptive long-term, in that once participants are done with their program, they are encouraged to take what they’ve learned and create their own ideal, sustainable diets. Whole30 calls that “Food Freedom,” and your Food Freedom may include grains, dairy, soy, peanut butter, beans, alcohol, and added sugar—whatever foods you decide are worth it and work well for you.

A Paleo approach is a general lifestyle recommendation to avoid grains, legumes, dairy, and processed foods, and focus your everyday diet on meat, seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruit, and healthy fats. Paleo is a template for everyday eating meant to be followed for the majority of meals, although there is no one universally accepted definition of “Paleo.” Some Paleo templates allow for natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup in moderation, while the related Primal framework allows for red wine and dark chocolate.

No universally accepted definition of “Paleo.” Many programs allow natural sweeteners in moderation (honey, maple syrup), and some allow small amounts of wine or dark chocolate. 

Shares specific rules for 30 days of elimination and 10+ days of reintroduction. During elimination, participants remove all forms of added sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, and dairy, with few exceptions.

Participants are encouraged to follow this lifestyle in perpetuity. Many program leaders suggest an “80/20” approach to allow for special foods or “treats.”

After elimination and reintroduction, participants take what they’ve learned about how foods work in their unique bodies and create their own unique “Food Freedom” plan, per the book Food Freedom Forever

A Whole30 diet is comprised of “whole” foods, meaning naturally-derived foods that don’t contain additives. This includes protein-rich foods such as meat, seafood, and eggs, along with a variety of vegetables and fruits, natural fats, and seasonings like herbs and spices. All foods eaten during the Whole30 program should have simple and easily identifiable ingredients or just whole, unprocessed options that do not require any ingredient list.

The following foods are restricted from the Whole30 diet: 

  • Added sugar (real or artificial)
  • Alcohol in any form
  • Grains
  • Legumes
  • Dairy
  • Carrageenan or sulfites
  • Recreating baked goods or other foods (even if using Whole30 Approved ingredients)

Once you know your meal prep game plan, you’ll know how many meals you’ll need to supplement your cooking.

 1 Meal Per Day: You love to cook! Most of your meals are planned out, but you need a few to supplement when you’re on the go, have busy work days, or your family members need to eat at different times. 

 2 Meals Per Day: You’re prepared to do some Whole30 cooking, but want more frequent quick and easy meals throughout the week. Perhaps you cook for one often, have an unpredictable schedule, work a night shift, or need to take lunch or dinner to work with you (and only have a microwave). 

 3 Meals Per Day: You are You work a demanding job, are on the go often, or just don’t love being in the kitchen, and don’t have the time, energy, or desire to cook your own meals from scratch. This option is also perfect for those who want to do the Whole30 with little label reading,no room for error, and are ready for a serious commitment.
